Background
Inmet Mining was seeking to effectively minimize the impact of Acid mine drainage from operations, in line with their Waste Management Policy, Tailings Management System and the Safety, Environmental and Community Affairs (SECA) Standards.
Project Objective
To remediate acid mine drainage runoff from operations, which had flowed into a pit pond and discharged into nearby surface waters. Establishment of an enhanced biomass growth in pit pond to create a wetland ecosystem to continuously clean acid mine drainage.
Result
Removal of acidity and metals mediated by physical and biochemical processes with the introduction of selective micro-organisms, nutrients and Fiton (a growth stimulant). With proprietary nutrients and Fiton, developed wetlands are more tolerant to changes in flow, influent quality and provide consistent effluent quality. They are self-sustaining and virtually maintenance free with minimal side effects to environment.
